Dwight Thompson – Bass
Originally from Cody, Wyoming, Dwight Thompson was squired into music at a very young age. His first instrument was piano from age 4 until 12. In those days, the Thompson family had a rule that you would play piano until age 12, at which time you could continue with that instrument, choose a different instrument, or do something else. Dwight quit. Six months later, his oldest brother, a drummer, purchased a bass guitar and amp and left it in Dwight’s room. It wasn’t long before it was obvious that the bass was his soul-instrument. Within a few months, an upright bass was added to the mix and the rest is history.
After acquiring a bachelor’s in Jazz and Commercial Music Performance from Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver under the watchful eye of bassist, Ken Walker, Dwight became a staple in the Denver jazz scene until the world called for him to expand into new geographical horizons… all over the world. As the bassist of the world renowned QE2 Orchestra, Dwight was blessed to perform with some of the world’s top musicians for nearly four years. During his time off from sailing the high seas, Dwight took refuge in Trinidad and Tobago to perform with legendary steel pannist, Ken (Professor) Philmore and other great calypsonians of the Caribbean islands. A brief 3 year stint with rock band, The Congress, allowed the bassist to tour the United States, opening for acts such as Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Trombone Shorty and even drummer Artimus Pyle, formerly of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
As fate would have it, the Rocky Mountains have reclaimed this once wandering musician. Dwight has checked back in to “Hotel Colorado” and never wants to leave. He currently performs as a staple bassist with funk powerhouse, SuperMagick, as well as local and short touring gigs with various local and national acts.
