Dwight Thompson – Bass
Dwight Thompson stands among the finest bassists in the country—a musician whose depth, versatility, and unmistakable groove have taken him from the Rocky Mountains to stages around the world. Born in Cody, Wyoming, Dwight was immersed in music early, beginning classical piano at age four. Though he stepped away from the instrument at twelve, fate intervened when his older brother left a bass guitar and amp in his room. The connection was instant. Within months, Dwight had also taken up the upright bass, discovering the instrument that would shape his life and career.
He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Jazz and Commercial Music Performance from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, studying under renowned bassist Ken Walker. Dwight quickly became a cornerstone of the Denver jazz scene—until the world called him outward. As bassist for the internationally acclaimed QE2 Orchestra, he spent nearly four years performing with top-tier musicians across the globe. When not at sea, he immersed himself in the vibrant musical culture of Trinidad and Tobago, performing with legendary steel pannist Ken “Professor” Philmore and other celebrated calypsonians throughout the Caribbean.
Dwight’s range extends far beyond jazz. A three-year run with the rock band The Congress took him on extensive U.S. tours, sharing stages with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Trombone Shorty, and even Artimus Pyle of Lynyrd Skynyrd. His ability to move seamlessly between genres—jazz, funk, rock, calypso, and more—has made him a first-call bassist for artists across the musical spectrum.
After years of international travel, the Rocky Mountains have reclaimed him. Now happily rooted back in Colorado, Dwight remains one of the region’s most sought-after bassists. He performs regularly with the funk powerhouse SuperMagick and appears with a wide range of local and national acts, both onstage and on the road.
